Dear Families,
Welcome to our webpage! As soon as I figure out how to do it, I'll be posting photos of our wonderful students! Please let me know if you do not want your child's picture to be included.
This week we will continue to refine our skills as readers and writers. I sent home a writer's checklist today for families to use during Wednesday's writing homework. Please encourage your child to use it. Speaking of writing, we are doing "writer's workshop", which takes the children through the steps of the writing process: Planning, Drafting, Revising, Reading to a Friend, Conferencing with your Teacher, and Publishing. When your child brings a book home, please enjoy it and then return it to school to stay in his or her book box. On Mondays our super writers will be sharing their books with Ms. Drummond. What a treat!
In science we are applying the concept of problem and solution as we learn about scientists, and in math we are continuing to work on problem solving, addition and subtraction.
Your First Grader's first progress report is coming home on Wednesday. One transition from Kindergarten to First Grade is the concept of grading, and I will be introducing it this week to our students. At Eden Park, the grades are on a scale of 100. Since this is too abstract for our learners, I will be translating it to the grades of 1, 2, 3, and 4. A grade of 4 (100) is excellent work ("I did my very best, and it shows!"). A grade of 3 (90) is very good ("I did a good job, but I can do better.") A grade of 2 (80) is okay ("I did some of the work, but I didn't finish.") And a grade of 1(70) is not good ("I did not do anything.") The children will also be learning how to assess their own work, a very important life long skill.
Great news! Our class has once again earned 25 marbles! This time the winning vote is....a PJ Party!!!! Please dress your child in weather appropriate PJs and tennis shoes (no slippers please), and please send a favorite book to share with a friend. This will happen on Friday.
I hope you all have a good week!

Gretchen Farris
